So Fresh and So Clean!

After being plagued by an active Pacific storm system that kept our suits stinky but our wits intact and the elves working too slow to reproduce copies, the third edition of morSURF Magazine is finally available to its legions (yes, legions!) of followers! Once again, readers can find comfort in the well-versed prose, carefully selected images and an interview with the coolest cat on the scene, Mr. Christian Wach. And there's beer. And iconic shapers. Some high-performance sliders. Super SUPer Candice Appleby. And understanding how surfing keeps thriving in the recession.

Pick up a copy. Read it. Stroke it. Love it. And maybe pass it on to a friend.

You can also find it here. (Hopefully. Be patient.)

Christian Wach

I've had the pleasure of working with and documenting some of Christian Wach's surfing exploits for the past 3 years. He's hyper-talented in most everything he does (surfing, painting, music, writing), very level-headed and friendly with anyone he crosses paths with. Those are three rare traits to find in the surf industry. Oversized egos tend to outweigh humility rather frequently. Conducted a bi-coastal interview with Mr. CWach a few nights ago for the next issue of morSURF. Should be out late August/early September. Stay tuned.

Also, a little plug for one of Christian's many projects, Canvas Surfboards. Though he won't be shaping, he'll be putting his artistic talents to use in bedazzling the fine surf creations. But he won't be alone, Canvas intends to be a collaboration of artists, which means a vast array of fine looking boards. All the shaping will be done by Ryan Engle of EngleNation/Nation Surfboards/Nation MFG (not certain which he's going with).

Scratching For the Surface

It's been a hectic and sleepless past few weeks. I've been busting my behind (for the most part) trying to get the next issue of morSURF off to the printer all the while keeping my social sanity. (There's only so many evenings I can keep myself cooped up at my desk with only my Macbook and my cat to keep me company.) So, with the end in sight (for this issue, that is), I'm coming up for a breath of air to declare to myself and the blogging universe that I will return to my position of eclectic wordsmith and regular post'r. In the meantime, enjoy this small bit of satisfaction that helped get me through the down days ... a solid southern hemi swell that turned Newport Beach's groin field into a pointbreak. Until next time, stay classy.

NB, stacked four deep.

Dave Allee + Almond Surfboards & Designs

Met up with Mr. Allee at his super duper surf shop off of Old Newport Blvd. this past weekend for an interview for the mag. I'd heard some talk about some nutty new surfboard label popping up in my backyard, and finally stumbled across the facts on the blogosphere. We crossed paths at a surf flick premiere, played email tag a bit (that's not supposed to sound as suggestive as it seems), and finally were able to set aside some time for me to come and dig into the background of Almond. I must say, after spending the early afternoon wandering about the shop and chatting with my fellow Chapman alum Dave about the company and what's gone into the the thing coming together, it's rather apparent that it's quite a unique being in this oh-so-predictable thing called the surf industry.

Read a bit more in the upcoming issue of morSURF. Or, if the anticipation is just a bit too much, navigate your way over to Almond's website or blog and scour the depths of the Almond spirit.

morSURF Magazine — Vol. 1, No. 1

Took a bit longer than we anticipated, but the first issue of morSURF is printed! Stop by your local surf shop along the East Coast or Hawaii, or nearly any surf shop off Pacific Coast Highway in California! It's on the racks for only a $5 cover price (or $20 for the year at morsurf.com). The eco-friendly publication is packed with vibrant photos and enjoyable prose. Plenty to wrap your surf-obsessed mind around! A bit of this, a bit of that: Bonga. Quivers. A multi-talented female. INDO. Surf cruise. Fins.

morSURF Magazine is anything and everything. Every type of board. Men and women. Kids and adults. Domestic and international. Cool and quirky. Mainstream and grassroots. Pick up a copy, give it a gander and feel free to email over your thoughts (chasen@morsurf.com).

Surf hard and prosper. –CM
