Miniature Marching Band

Since it had a link to a cover story ("Battle of the Bands," Aug. 18) I wrote weeks prior, I went out to Delmar Stadium in northwest Houston to cover the Houston ISD Marching Band Festival this past weekend. Seventeen high school and five middle schools came out to perform for a panel of volunteer adjudicators, as a lead up to some big competitions coming in a few weeks time. Temps were in the low 90s, so I felt for these kids in their canvas, full-length uniforms. Range of big and smaller bands, and quite a variety of music. After growing up in Southern California, where marching bands weren't given much attention, I've come to appreciate what these groups of students put together. They work hard to produce a quality product -- both sight and sound.

This was one of the photos I got, and our art director used a bit of tilk-shift magic in Photoshop to give it the toy set appearance. More images in the slideshow for the Houston Press.
